Hacienda Agua Fria
Hacienda Agua Fria has been in the Carillo family for a hundred years
now, and coffee has been growing on those hills for more than two hundred. Back in the heyday of the farm in previous generations, their coffee was being recognized with prizes for quality at fairs in Spain and Belgium.
Over the decades and through many social and political changes in Venezuela, the coffee came to be no longer exported. But in recent years he descendants of Doctor Jose Tomas Carillo Marquez have renovated the
farm, and are now producing top quality specialty coffee.
Through our partnership with Curador exporters, we acquired a small amount of the most recent crop. This is a washed coffee in the traditional Latin American style, resulting in a fresh, clean and easy-to-drink cup.
Connection
Although everyone on our team agreed this was an excellent coffee to purchase, the real drive to acquire it came from Valeria, one of our senior roasters and cuppers. Valeria was born and raised in Venezuela, in a town just 25 kilometers from Agua Fria.
Venezuela is a beautiful and wide-ranging country, with growing conditions ideal for top quality arabica coffee. Just over their western border is famous Colombia, one of the giants of coffee exporting. Due to a long series of complex factors - political, social, and economic - fantastic Venezuelan produce, including their excellent coffee, has been largely hidden from the rest of the world.
In the cup, this coffee is silky with a honey-like texture. The roast is relatively light, but the excellent silky body in this coffee means
that it makes a very nice espresso. We also brew it as filter coffee sometimes. In your own cup of Maboya, you may expect citrus flavors up front, with a smooth mouthfeel and slightly savory undertones.
It has long been a dream of Valeria's to get some specialty Venezuelan coffee in front of her friends and neighbors here in the
Netherlands, and in front of our customers! A lot of dedication, pride, and perseverance went into keeping this farm going over the years, and into creating an export-grade, specialty coffee that can be proudly
shared with the rest of the world. Maboya is a testament to the hard-working people of Venezuela and we are excited to share it with you.
